A Healthy Bank Balance Does Not Always Mean a Healthy Business

Many business owners start their day in the same way — by opening online banking and checking the account balance. When the balance looks healthy, it is easy to assume that the business is doing well. But a bank statement only shows the movement of cash. It does not provide the full picture of what is happening inside the company.

For example, a business may have a large amount of money in its account today. However, some of that money may already be committed to salaries, supplier payments, taxes, rent, or other upcoming expenses.

In reality, the amount of cash that is actually available for use may be much smaller than it appears.

The opposite can also happen.

A low bank balance may cause concern, even though significant payments from customers are expected within the next few days. In such a case, the current cash position may simply reflect the normal cycle of the business rather than a financial problem.

A bank statement alone cannot tell you:

• whether the business is making a profit;
• how much customers still owe you;
• what liabilities are due for payment;
• which expenses have increased;
• how financially stable the company really is.

This is where accounting information and proper financial analysis become essential.

A bank statement answers the question, “How much cash do we have today?”

Accounting helps answer a much more important one:

“What is happening in the business, and why?”

That is why sound business decisions should not be based solely on the cash balance. Accounting information provides a broader view of the company’s financial position and helps owners understand what the numbers are actually telling them.

Advice for Business Owners

Do not rely only on your bank balance. Once a month, ask your accountant to review not only your cash position, but also accounts receivable, accounts payable, and financial results. Looking at these figures together gives you a much clearer and more objective picture of the business.
