1 August – Azerbaijani Alphabet and Azerbaijani Language Day - FChain

The soul, memory, and identity of every nation live through its language. Today, August 1, Azerbaijani Alphabet and Azerbaijani Language Day, is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a day to reflect on who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.

Our mother tongue is the first lullaby we hear from the moment we are born, our first joy, and our first sorrow. It is the language through which we learned to love, express our emotions, stand up for our rights, and preserve our values. Behind every word and every letter passed down by our ancestors lies centuries of history, resilience, and rich cultural heritage.

Our language has stood the test of time, carried through ancient manuscripts and the epic tales of Dede Gorgud before reaching us today. The restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence opened a new chapter in our history, paving the way for our nation’s integration into the global writing system and making the return to the Latin-based Azerbaijani alphabet both necessary and meaningful. This milestone marked a proud and gradual transition to our national alphabet in an independent Azerbaijan.

Let us not celebrate our mother tongue only today. Let us embrace it every day by speaking it with care and clarity, preserving its richness, and promoting it with pride. Protecting and developing our language is a shared responsibility and a tribute to the generations who preserved it before us.
